Horse Care

Is your horse in pain or other discomfort?

Horses have been part of human life for thousands of years. No animal lover can ignore the beauty, power and speed of these gracious animals with their intelligent and willing character. Especially to horse lovers these animals give immense pleasure and satisfaction to have around. Horses are used intensively and in many different ways, whether it is as working horses, riding them for competition or just pleasure. They are therefore prone to having accidents and becoming unwell. But they can also suffer from mental emotional issues like fear (since they are flight animals) and grief (e.g due to loss of long-term paddock mate). You will find a list of common conditions further down this page.

Mare with her foal

Most people that have a horse with an issue consult their Vet first. The Vet gives a diagnosis and can often resolve the problem. However you may choose to stay away from drugs, where possible and help your horse get back to health in a more natural way.

The risk with drugs is that they often suppress symptoms, but not really solve the problem and symptoms can re-appear when you stop giving the drugs or the drugs stop working. Also the long term use of drugs can cause serious side effects.

Homeopathy and Bowen Therapy can offer a safe, gentle and effective treatment for many conditions. You will find a list of common conditions further down this page.

My holistic approach to disease.

Finding a clear definition of disease is not easy. Neither is finding one for health. From a holistic point of view I see disease as an expression of an imbalance in the body. This could be either physical, mental or both. The imbalance can be on many levels, hormonal, digestive, lymphatic, muscular skeletal, neurological etc. The disease can express itself in certain symptoms, like itchy skin, abscesses, rashes, lameness, pain, fever, coughs and so on. In order to restore the horse back to health, we need to restore the balance.

Both Homeopathy and Bowen Therapy aim to help your horse to restore that balance and stimulate the so called vital force. This way the horse is able to heal itself and results in a lasting solution for your animal.

What is your horse suffering from?

If your horse is suffering from any of the conditions listed below or from any other illness or discomfort, contact me per email or call me on 07 578 0824 to discuss how Bowen Therapy* or Homeopathy can help. Below you will find a brief description of each condition.

*Please note: I am a qualified Small Animal Bowen Therapist. I am not officially qualified as an Equine Bowen Therapist. However I am able to provide Bowen treatments for your horse.

abscess horse

An abscess occurs when an infection develops in a part of the body that is capable of opening into a pocket. Most commonly this happens under the skin as a result of a puncture wound. Bites and scratches are the most common cause. But in horses you also find abscesses in the hoof. The first sign of and abscess is usually a soft swelling under the skin. This can be painful, but often there is little or no pain. The pocket fills with pus and at some point the abscess will rupture. After that the wound from the rupture will usually heal. Abscesses can be treated with Homeopathy.

horse arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of a joint in any location, though we generally think of it in relation to limbs. There are two main types of arthritis: rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis refers to an auto-immune disease where the body attacks the joint tissues causing inflammation and pain. Osteoarthritis is also called degenerative joint disease and is partly nutritional as well as the result of chronic trauma to the joints. The inflammation usually creates pain when the joint is moving. Arthritis can be supported with Homeopathy and/or Bowen Therapy.

colic horse

Colic is a relatively common disorder of the digestive system and is basically abdominal pain. It usually refers to severe abdominal discomfort and symptoms can include pawing, rolling, reluctance to eat, increased heart rate and sometimes the inability to defecate. Colic can range from mild pain to severe pain and can be life threatening for the horse. If you suspect your horse is displaying colic symptoms, it is important that you contact your Vet first. Colic can be supported and treated with Homeopathy.

horse conjunctivitis

This is an inflammation of the membrane covering the eye. This can be caused by an injury or irritation from some external matter like hay dust. Symptoms include a swollen eyelid, sensitivity to light and liquid discharges from the eye. Mucous or pus material can gather in the corner of the eye. Conjunctivitis can be treated with Homeopathy.

Cushing’s disease

This is a condition often seen in older horses and caused by a tumor developing in the pituitary gland. As this tumor slowly grows, it sends the wrong signals to the rest of the body to secrete excessive hormones — primarily a stress hormone called cortisol. Too much cortisol can affect the body negatively in many different ways. Symptoms can include excessive thirst, a thick curly coat that does not shed, Laminitis, muscle wasting, a pot belly and weight loss. Cushing’s disease can be managed and supported with Homeopathy.

horse diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is a way for the body to remove toxins and waste material quickly. With acute diarrhoea this almost always the case and these situations will often resolve itself. Causes include ingestion of toxins or bacteria as in food poisoning, virus infections and parasites. Diarrhoea can also be a side effect of certain drugs. When a horse has chronic diarrhoea, there is usually something else going on in the body and the immune system is not able to cope. The causes can be many, including poor diet and stress. If the diarrhoea persists and lasts for more than two days and/or your horse is dehydrated and lethargic, consult your Vet first for an examination. Diarrhoea can be treated with Homeopathy.

Fear and anxiety

There are many kinds of fear and anxiety. Your horse can have fear of loud noises, strangers, strange places or have performance anxiety. Your horse may have fear of being left on its own, fear of being separated, or of being touched. There are many causes of fear including abuse, past trauma (physical or mental), or simply having been neglected. Fear and anxiety can be treated effectively with Homeopathy.

As we all know, horses do have feelings! When a horse loses a paddock mate for example, the horse can be affected by that loss. But also a neglected and abused horse can have grief and feel sad. The horse can become withdrawn, sad and not wanting to eat or is just pining away in a corner and looking depressed. Grief can be treated effectively with Homeopathy.

This is an inflammation of the sensitive laminae of the foot. This can be acute or chronic. Usually the two front feet are involved. Causes can be overeating on lush grass, infections elsewhere in the body, poorly trimmed feet or Cushing’s disease. When the forefeet are involved you will see the horse putting his weight more on his hind feet. This is to release pressure on the painful fore feet. The horse will be unwilling to move. There may be heat over the coronary band and the wall and you can feel a pulse in the digital artery. The horse may be anxious, sweating and have an increased respiration rate. Laminitis can be treated with Homeopathy.

Muscular skeletal issues

If your horse is lame, has stiff movements or is overall not in balance, this can be a result of many things. Depending on the cause and what else is going on, both Homeopathy and Bowen Therapy can help. Please contact me to discuss any specific issues and see if and which therapy could benefit your horse.

Skin problems (including itching, mudfever, rainscald, parasites)

horse rainscald

Skin disease is often an outwardly expression of an internal chronic disease or imbalance. Skin disease can be upsetting, because the symptoms are very visible and the animal may be quite uncomfortable. Recovery can take a long time and takes patience and trust. This can be challenging if your horse is itchy or does not look very nice for shows, for example when mudfever or rainscald have taken over. Causes for skin issues are wide and varied. A good diet is important in all disease, but especially in skin disease. Other causes of skin issues can be allergies, a weak immune system, parasites and emotional stress. Please contact me to discuss your horse’s specific skin problem. Skin problems can be treated with Homeopathy.

Horse Thrush

Thrush is a fungal disease that affects the frog tissue. Symptoms are that the feet have a bad smell and there will be a black gunk in the clefts of the frog.

What works for my horse is cleaning the feet every day and then spraying the frog with a mixture of 50% water and 50% white vinegar. Vinegar has anti-bacterial and anti- fungal properties.

Horse success stories

Horse with warts in its mouth – Homeopathy

I treated a horse that had several warts just inside his mouth on the right hand side. The warts were quite pointed and hard. The horse was given a Homeopathic remedy and when checked a month later the warts were a lot smaller, softer and not pointy anymore.

Horse with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) – Homeopathy

Horse nasal discharge

A lovely mare that was tiring quickly. She especially had problems walking uphill, already from a young age. Initially she started having issues every autumn, coughing for a certain period of time, but now it became more permanent. Her owner could not ride her for very long as she was getting tired really quickly. We treated her with several Homeopathic remedies and she recovered well. The owner can take her for longer rides again.

Horse with avocado poisoning – Homeopathy

Swelling under the belly

My own horse decided to try some avocado leaves one day. As a consequence she developed big swelling on the underside of her abdomen and she was a bit lethargic. She was otherwise fine, eating and drinking normally. The Vet told me that they could not do anything and she just had to process the poison, which would normally take 2-4 weeks. Luckily it was not deadly. I supported her with a Homeopathic remedy and she was back to normal again in just 8 days.

Horse with stiffness in his neck – Bowen Therapy

My friend’s mare was not comfortable when ridden by her owner and she appeared to be quite stiff in her neck. She was given just one Bowen treatment and improved greatly after that.

Horse with swollen hot hind leg – Homeopathy

horse swollen leg

I found my horse one morning with a very swollen and hot hind leg. She was clearly in pain as she did not want to put any weight on it. She has some scar tissue just below her fetlock that must have opened up and got infected (it was wet and muddy).I knew what remedy to give her, but did not have it at the time. I gave her a first dose at 5pm and another one at 11pm. The next morning the heat was gone and she seemed more comfortable. I gave her one more dose that morning and the next morning her leg was back to normal. When you have the right remedy Homeopathy works really fast!
